Switzerland

Switzerland does not issue International Driving Permits (IDP) in the 1949 Geneva Convention format. However, you can drive in Japan by presenting your original driver's license issued by Switzerland together with an original Japanese translation.

The Japanese translation of your driver's license must be issued by one of the following authorized organizations:
- The license-issuing authority or your country's Embassy/Consulate in Japan. - Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) - Japan Association for Supporting Visiting Foreign Drivers (JASVFD)

* Please note that International Driving Permits (IDP) issued under any format other than the 1949 Geneva Convention (such as the 1968 Vienna Convention) are NOT valid for driving in Japan.
* Images are for illustrative purposes only and may differ from the actual documents.

Required Documents

Please note that you cannot drive without the required documents.
No refunds will be provided even if you fail to present them.

Driving Period in Japan

- Driving is permitted only if less than one year has passed since the date of your arrival in Japan.

The "3-Month Rule" (For Mid-to-Long-Term Residents)

If you are a resident of Japan, the one-year driving period is determined by your re-entry date:

Re-entry after less than 3 months abroad:

The date of your re-entry is NOT recognized as a new starting date. You cannot drive unless you are still within one year of your previous arrival date.

Re-entry after 3 months or more abroad:

The date of your re-entry WILL be recognized as a new starting date, and you will be permitted to drive for one year from that date.

* Note: The "3-Month Rule" also applies to individuals who departed Japan with a Refugee Travel Document.
* Recommendation: For mid-to-long-term residents holding a foreign driver's license, we recommend converting your license to a Japanese one at a Driver's License Center.

[IMPORTANT] Warning: Fraudulent International Driving Permits (IDPs)

Currently, numerous unauthorized websites are selling counterfeit International Driving Permits, falsely claiming they are "Valid in Japan." These documents do not meet Japanese legal requirements. Presenting a counterfeit IDP is considered "Driving Without a License" in Japan, and you will not be allowed to drive under any circumstances.

Following police guidelines, we strictly verify the authenticity of all documents. MONSTER KART accepts no responsibility for any trouble or damages resulting from the presentation of counterfeit documents.
