Please note that digital documents (e.g., smartphone screens, PDFs, or digital copies) are STRICTLY PROHIBITED; all physical originals are required.
* Please note that even if a country is a member of the 1949 Geneva Convention, they may not necessarily issue IDPs in that specific format.
* Please note that International Driving Permits (IDP) issued under any format other than the 1949 Geneva Convention (such as the 1968 Vienna Convention) are NOT valid for driving in Japan.

Verification of International Driving Permits (IDPs) Valid in Japan
While International Driving Permits (IDPs) under the 1949 Geneva Convention (which Japan adheres to) are issued as paper booklets with formats prescribed by the treaty, their specific colors and sizes vary depending on the issuing country.
To drive on public roads in Japan, you must possess an IDP based on the 1949 Geneva Convention that strictly meets all of the following conditions:
1. It must be a physical paper booklet (Original) in the "1949 Format"
The cover must explicitly display the year "1949". Permits under the 1968 format (Vienna Convention), other treaties, digital versions, card types, and photocopies are ALL INVALID in Japan.
2. It must be an authentic document issued by an authorized institution
Limited only to those issued by government authorities or officially recognized organizations (e.g., AAA in the U.S.). Unofficial "translation certificates" purchased online that mimic an IDP are NEVER accepted.
3. Category "B" must have a valid stamp or mark
Street karts are classified as regular motor vehicles in Japan. Please ensure that the "B" box on your IDP has a valid stamp, checkmark, or punch hole. You CANNOT drive with only a Category "A" (motorcycle) endorsement.
4. It must be within its validity period
It must satisfy BOTH conditions: "Within 1 year from the date of issue" AND "Within 1 year from the date of entry into Japan."
(If you used an automated gates at the airport and do not have an entry stamp in your passport, you may be required to present proof of your arrival date (e.g., your flight boarding pass stub).)
* International Driving Permits (IDPs) cannot be issued within Japan. Please ensure you obtain it in your home country prior to your arrival.
* If you hold a Japanese driver's license, you must bring the valid physical original Japanese driver's license.
